Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) is pleased to announce that the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has officially approved the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Program. This approval confirms the program meets the quality standards expected of accredited degree-granting institutions and supports DCB’s mission to provide high-quality career and technical education.

The MLT program prepares students for careers in clinical laboratories, where they perform diagnostic testing that supports medical providers in diagnosing and treating disease. MLTs analyze blood, body fluids, and other patient samples using specialized instruments and lab techniques. Although lab professionals work behind the scenes, the majority of medical decisions rely on laboratory tests, making lab tech professionals an essential part of the healthcare team.

Students enrolled in this program will receive hands-on training in hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, and other laboratory disciplines. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with practical lab experience to develop the technical and analytical skills needed in a clinical setting.

Because laboratory careers require precision and critical thinking, the program is well-suited for students who are detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable following established procedures. It also appeals to individuals who want to contribute to patient care but prefer a laboratory environment rather than direct patient interaction. Individuals who are interested in science and healthcare are encouraged to apply.

Demand for qualified laboratory professionals remains strong across the country, providing graduates with excellent employment opportunities. “The approval of the Medical Lab Technician program is an important step in expanding high-quality healthcare education at Dakota College at Bottineau. Paige Baade, Assistant Dean for Nursing & Health Professions, shares, “This program strengthens our ability to prepare students for essential roles in healthcare and supports the critical need for skilled laboratory professionals in our region.” Career paths include hospital laboratories, clinics, state and reference laboratories, forensic labs, and public health facilities. Graduates may also pursue additional education to advance into other laboratory science roles.

DCB will welcome the first cohort of students into the program beginning Fall 2026. The program is offered at DCB’s Minot Heath Center West location. For more information about the Medical Lab Technician program and to apply, please visit: www.dakotacollege.edu/apply
