Kortney is a native of Portal, North Dakota. He attended West Virginia University and Minot State University, earning a degree in History and German. He studied medieval history at Boston College and is currently pursuing a doctorate of education at the University of North Dakota. His research areas are conceptions of power in the Medieval German Empire and the development of critical thinking in social science classrooms. His other interests are philosophy, travel, medieval fantasy, and science fiction.
