Tentative Course Outline/Topics: **January 28 th – 30 th students will be attending the North Dakota Greenhouse, Nursery and Landscaping Association (NDGLA) conference in Fargo, ND as a required field trip for the class. Travel, Hotel and Registration costs will be covered by the Horticulture Department, though students may be responsible for some meals. If you join/add the class after conference registration you will not be able to attend and will be required to do a make-up assignment as assigned by the instructor. ***Feb 2 nd students will have the option to attend the ND Local Food Conference in Mandan, ND ****Note Sometime in February there will be scheduled a mandatory field trip to the International Peace Gardens.  Identification required for entrance to the Peace Gardens is preferably a passport or passport card, if you don’t have one of these, you will need photo ID and an official birth certificate Week Topics and Assignments 1 Jan 9th Introduction to Class “How to Design and Build a Vegetable Garden” –Jeff Ball Video 2 Jan 14 th and 16 th “How to Design a Flower Garden” –Jeff Ball Video Measuring a Garden Space, Basic Drawing and Design and Planning 3 Jan 23 rd Planting dates Full Sun and Part Sun Specialty Crop Gardens 4 Jan 28 th and 30 th NDGNLA Conference Conference Exercise 5 Feb 4 th and 6th Field Trip to International Peace Gardens 6 11 th and 13th Container Gardens and Raised Beds (Specialty Crops) Successive Planting, Market Gardens Exam Week 1-6 7 Feb 20th Permaculture- Basic Principles and Design 8 Feb 25 th and 27th Garden Planning Design Project Due March 1st Garden Planning Design Project Each student will have the opportunity to plan their own home garden using the principles learned throughout the course. There is tremendous freedom for flexibility and creativity in this assignment. The objective is to design a home garden that contains ornamental and edible plants and demonstrates elements of beauty, functionality, and sustainability. The principles of garden planning and maintenance addressed in class must be integrated into the garden design. Students will be given the last week of
