HIST 220: North Dakota History 5 Objective 3: Recognizes human social and governmental structures • Skill 1: Shows knowledge of the importance of local and global governmental systems • Skill 2: Demonstrates, through historical examples, what happens when differing social structures collide Goal 7: Demonstrates the ability to create and analyze art; evaluate aesthetics; and synthesize interrelationships among the arts, the humanities, and society Objective 2: Analyzes art • Skill 1: Possesses a base knowledge of art forms • Skill 2: Uses base knowledge to critique art works Objective 3: Evaluates aesthetics • Skill 1: Demonstrates knowledge of systems of aesthetics as those vary through time and among cultures • Skill 2: Evaluates relationship of content and form in art works Objective 4: Synthesizes interrelationships among arts, languages, the humanities, and societies • Skill 1: Demonstrates knowledge of art forms in cultures • Skill 2: Evaluates the impact of art on individuals and society Course Objectives: After completing this course, students will be able to: • Identify key historical events and people and the forces surrounding those events. In other words, students will have a grasp of the basic elements of North Dakota History. • Increase their familiarity with cultures within North Dakota that are different from their own cultures. • Understand the details of North Dakota's history, or more exactly, how they are interpreted today. • Understand how the history of North Dakota is currently affecting the students and others in the state. Course Requirements: This class will be a combination of interactive lectures, class discussions, group activities, written assignments, and group presentations. All students are expected to come to each class meeting having listened to, viewed, and/or read all assigned materials before each class meeting, having completed all assignments before or during each class meeting, and ready to engage in a critical discourse on the course materials and themes with the professor and other students. Assignments : Participation 200 points 20% Critical Analysis (PSA & RAW) 200 points 20% In-Class Evaluations (ICE) 200 points 20% Analytical Essay 200 points 20% Final Project: Group Presentation 200 points 20% Participation Participation includes, but not limited to, attending classes, active listening, completing class activities, discussing course materials, taking notes, reading/listening/viewing course materials, responding to comments or questions, and asking/answering questions. It is helpful to write up several questions, key quotations, or interpretations beforehand so that you have easily accessible information during the class meeting. Your preparation will be essential to the proper functioning of the class and to earning your final grade. Unexcused absences will negatively affect your grade. If need to miss a class for any reason, please notify the professor as soon as possible. It may be possible to turn in an alternative assignment that covers the missing participation assessment(s) with prior approval from the professor.
