2 Engl 110 Course Syllabus Textbook(s): 1. The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien 2. Coyote Warrior by Paul VanDevelder 3. The St. Martin’s Guide to Writing by Axelrod and Cooper Course Requirements: Writing Journal: Students will write in a journal daily . Topics should include the reading, course discussions, as well as meanderings of the mind. Journals will be checked periodically to ensure this exercise is being followed. Reading : ▪ Students are expected to read all texts independently. Reading deadlines are listed on the following course outline. o The St. Martin’s Guide to Writing : Students are expected to reach each chapter and write about what they have learned in their writing journals and each chapter will be discussed briefly in class. Notice that we will be reading the chapters out of order so it’s important to check the reading schedule. o The Things They Carried : Students will read O’Brien’s The Things They Carried by Sept 21. Students will turn in an essay on Sept. 21 analyzing one chapter of the story. They will write an accompanying narrative. o Coyote Warrior: Students will read VanDevlder’s Coyote Warrior by Oct. 26. Students will turn in an essay on Oct. 26 analyzing VanDevlder’s use of sources to strengthen his story. Writing: ▪ Prose: Character profile. ▪ Prose: Setting description. ▪ Analysis: Essay Analyzing The Things They Carried. ▪ Narrative: A story that relates the value of one personal item. ▪ Analysis: Essay Analyzing Coyote Warrior. ▪ Argument: A research-based essay aiming to persuade. ▪ Writing Guidebook: A guidebook created for future use of the student incorporating all useful information they have learned through the course including examples of their favorite works. Peer Review: For every essay, we will hold a peer review session. During this time, students will bring copies for every member of their group. Each essay will be read and reviewed: fellow students will provide feedback focusing on purpose, support, mechanics, grammar, etc to help each other improve their essays and writing skills. Kindness and honesty are mandatory.
