My office is McFarland 136. Course Description : Guided practice in college-level reading, writing and critical thinking. Course Objectives: Students will be able to write in different essay types or genres (such as memoir, letter, proposal, exam essay) for a variety of audiences and in a variety of contexts. (Meets DCB General Education Goal 4) Students will be aware of and will practice inventing, planning, drafting, and revising. (Meets DCB General Education Goal 4) Students will read closely and analyze what is read. (Meets DCB General Education Goal 4) Students will begin to learn to find and evaluate information resources, then integrate and acknowledge sources in their writing. (Meets DCB General Education Goal 4) Students will learn to work collaboratively with others and will apply a variety of invention and review techniques to their own and each other’s writings. (Meets DCB General Education Goal 4) Course O :  To identify and evaluate the thesis and supporting details in others’ writing  To use writing and revising strategies to produce essays  To cite sources accurately using MLA guidelines  To identify important concepts in reading and discuss them Textbook(s): Axelrod,Rise, Cooper,Charles. St. Martin’s Guide to Writing. 11 th ed. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2016. Print. VanDevelder, Pau. Coyote Warrior. New York Boston: Little, Brown and Company,2004. Print. * These textbooks are required for the course. Course Requirements: Students will read weekly assignments from in the textbook and other materials, will complete assignments on readings, and will write/revise paragraphs and essays on assigned topics, and complete weekly journal entries. If you miss 6 classes, you will lose 1 letter grade; miss 9 classes, lose 2 letter grades; miss 10 or more classes, you will fail the class. This is not because I am a mean teacher. If you are not in class and not participating, you will not be earning points. The lack of points from a lack of attendance will lower your grade. A student’s final grade is based on total points received from the following: • Essays • In Class Assignments Journals & Quizzes • Exams
