Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus HORT 176 Cactus and Succulent ID Number of credits: 2 credits Fall Semester 2019 Course Description: Cacti and Succulent ID will give students a background and history of one of the largest private cactus and succulent collections in the US located at the International Peace Garden Dunseith, ND. Students will study the difference between Cactus and succulents, and become familiar with their names and what it takes to grow them in a Conservatory situation, in the home or in the workplace. Pre-/Co-requisites: None Course Objectives: Students will learn to identify, care for and propagate cactus and succulents so that they can assist with the care of and/or sale of them upon employment. Students will also be introduced to the industry use of interior and exterior design with succulents. Students will also be introduced to the specific plant structure and function mechanisms that set succulents apart from other plant species. At least 1 week will be spent at the International Peace Garden Conservatory located in Dunseith, ND and the Canadian border. While at the Peace Gardens the class will take place on Monday between 12:30am-4:00pm. Transportation will be provided by the Horticulture Department. Textbook(s): supplemental readings will be provided Course Requirements: Travel to the International Peace Garden. Mandatory attendance. (Identification required is a minimum of an official birth certificate and photo ID. A passport or passport card is preferred). Weekly lab assignments (10 pts each) Class participation (10pts per class) Weekly Assigned Supplement Material Readings (Provided) and Reflective Writings/discussions (10 pts each)
