BIOL 115 - Human Structure & Function
4 Semester Hour Credits

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the structure and function of the human body. Topics include general chemistry, cell biology, histology, a survey of the major organ systems, development and genetics. Note: This course does include a lab component.

Schedule: Fall and spring semesters. This course follows the traditional on-campus schedule for beginning and ending dates.

Delivery Method: Online. Students are not expected to come to the campus at any time.

Textbook: Longenbaker, Susannah Nelson. Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology. 7th ed. McGraw-Hill. ISBN: 978-0-07-352562-4. There is also a $50 class fee that must be paid with your tuition for this class to help defray the cost of lab supplies.

Course Objectives: It is expected that students will be able to:

  • To learn and retain information essential to the broad understanding knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
  • To understand and utilize the scientific method of inquiry
  • To understand current scientific views of natural phenomenon
  • To apply scientific information and principles to everyday life
  • To recognize the relationship between science and technology

Work Expectations:

  • Graded work includes biweekly exams, lab reports and lab quizzes
  • Ungraded work includes reading assignments and miscellaneous homework assignments
  • Students will be required to perform dissection on mammalian specimens (fetal pig or rat) and sheep organs

Exams - Policies & Procedures:

  • All exams are taken online.
  • Students need to set up or select an environment conducive for testing (e.g. distraction-free area at home, a computer lab in a library, etc.).
  • Exams and quizzes are released for a 24 to 48 hour period.
  • Exams consist of 50 points of multiple choice, true/false, and completion type questions. Students have 35 minutes to complete each exam and have only one attempt per exam. Lab quizzes consist of 20 points of multiple choice, true/false, and completion type questions. Students have 15 minutes to complete each lab quiz and have only one attempt per quiz.
