AH 143 - Practical Applications in Coding II
2 Semester Hour Credits

Course Description: This course extends the coding practice students started in AH 142 to more complex coding cases requiring multiple codes. The exercises will utilize authentic coding cases and medical documents.

Schedule: Fall, Spring, Summer. This course is offered in an 8-week session. The course is offered 3 times during the academic year. At the midterm of the fall semester, at the midterm of the spring semester, and at the beginning of the summer semester.

Delivery Method: Online. Students are not expected to come to the campus at any time.

Course Objectives: It is expected that students will be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of the ICD-9 and CPT codes.

  • Develop further ability and confidence in coding medical records.

  • Give hands-on experience using medical records.

  • Regular participation in the class is expected

  • Independent work (not graded):

  • Graded assignments:

  • Discussion topics listed in the course calendar.

  • Grades: Grades are based on total points earned and include the points earned on practice exercises.

Exams - Policies & Procedures:

  • All assignments can be completed on any computer with Internet access

  • Students need to select a testing environment conducive for concentration work,  such as a distraction-free area at home, a computer lab at a library, etc.

  • Assignments have 5 point questions. Questions may only be answered once

  • Discussion topic are worth 20 point each and will be added at the end of the term
